US Speaker of House in Wudaokou

US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spoke today at Beijing's Tsinghua University on behalf of a delegation from the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the Associated Press reports. "The impact of climate change is a tremendous risk to the security and well-being of our countries,” she told a receptive audience of 200 students and faculty. While the purpose of the trip remains promoting clean energy and handling climate change, much speculation has arisen about whether Speaker Pelosi will criticize China's human right's record, as she did in a visit in 1991. She has, however, avoided the topic. Speaker Pelosi's trip to China will be followed by other high-ranking US officials: Sen. John Kerry is already in China and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will arrive next week.
