Thunderstorm cools summer heat

Beginning around 7 am this morning, a thunderstorm slammed most of Beijing with rains that caused "chaos" on the roads and affected more than 600 flights, Xinhua News writes. Coming off the end of the 3-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, commuters today were greeted with delays in addition to typical rush-hour traffic -- one commuter says a ride that normally takes 20 minutes today took 1 hour. At the Capital Airport, authorities reported about two-thirds of an inch had fallen in the span of a few hours, which resulted in the cancellation of 201 flights and delays for 414 flights. On the positive side, the temperature today was much cooler than it typically is this time of year: the rain knocked today's high down to 80 degrees fahrenheit from yesterday's high of 91.
