Rainy weather soaks Beijing

People living in Beijing have been experiencing consistent rainstorms for the past week, and the pattern is likely to continue in the coming days, CCTV news and weather outlets report. On Monday, for example, major roads in western Beijing, including the western third ring road, were flooded, resulting in transportation disruptions throughout the city. News images show cars submerged in the streets, fire engines pumping away excess water and commuters on bikes trudging along flooded roads. The next day, on Tuesday, a sinkhole spanning two traffic lanes opened up near the Dawanglu bridge in the outskirts of the city's central business district, stopping traffic for hours. The spot at which the sinkhole occurred is near the site of a much larger sinkhole that took place in November 2007--and while Beijing's Roadway Administration Bureau says soft ground is to blame for them both, Tuesday's sinkhole ostensibly was helped along by the rainy weather.
