Olympic car use limits extended

Rules put in place during the lead-up to the Olympics that keep a fifth of Beijing's 3.61 million vehicles off the road each day have been extended for a year, according to the Associated Press. The rules, which are widely considered to have contributed to the lowest August pollution levels in 10 years, prohibit certain license plate numbers from taking to the road a couple days a week. Beijing residents generally regard this as a minor inconvenience that requires some planning ahead when it comes to shopping and other activities, but they also greatly appreciate the city's improved traffic conditions and cleaner skies.
