Karate Kid a box office winner

Filmed last summer in Beijing, a remake of the popular '80s movie The Karate Kid has opened at box offices around the world, coming in first among all movies this weekend with predicted sales of $60 million USD, the Examiner of Boston writes. Starring Jaden Smith -- son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith -- and Jackie Chan, reviewers have been carefully positive about the movie, saying that its plot generally follows the original version, and that "the local color" of Beijing is among the film's best new additions. However, critics also point out the movie -- which is said to be more violent than the original -- does not make complete use of Chinese culture and elements of kung fu (功夫 or gōngfu in Chinese, or karate in Japanese), which at times are overpowered by Hollywood fight-scene magic and power songs from AC/DC and Lady Gaga.
