The famous Huabiao Awards, one of the three major Chinese award ceremonies for film, were held this past Saturday in Beijing, the China Daily reports. The event drew scores of top-list Chinese film stars and directors, including Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Jackie Chan and director John Woo. Originally begun in 1957 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the awards were renamed in 1994 and have been held biannually since 2005. This year's big winners were Zhang Ziyi, who shared the best actress award, and John Woo, who was honored as the best overseas Chinese film director. Notably, the Huabiao Awards are the only officially sponsored film awards ceremony in China; the two other main film awards, which do not receive government support, are the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards.
