Earth Hour in Beijing

April 01, 2009 | Posted by Chris

This past weekend Beijing and several other Chinese cities participated in Earth Hour, an effort by the World Wildlife Foundation to get 1 billion of the world's population to shut off all unnecessary lights for one hour. In Beijing, the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium and the Water Cube were among the most prominent buildings to turn off the lights--many other establishments, including several in Wudaokou, also followed suit. In Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and all municipal government buildings shut off their lights as well. Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, when 2 million people participated; this year 67 national capitals and many other major cities took part.
