Beijing is the capital of China, right?

That's right, Beijing is the capital of China, making it the modern political epicenter of the country. Beijing has a long history as the country's capital, and because of this it has developed a unique position in Chinese culture as the "emperor's city." Traditionally regarded as a place of power, deep cultural richness, and higher education, Beijing today is positioning itself to become a world technological and business hub -- but the traditional reference to the city being "the foot of the imperial walls" (huángchénggēnr or 皇城根儿) still very much applies because it is the seat of the Chinese government.
