Yesterday players in the global auto industry unveiled nearly 1000 cars at this weekend's opening of the Beijing International Auto Exhibition, major news outlets report. Running from April 23 to May 2, the Beijing Auto Show -- also known as Auto China -- is a major platform for carmakers to introduce their latest models in China, including both concept and production cars. Crowds have flocked to view exhibitions by brands like Ferrari, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Honda, Ford and Hyundai -- among many others. The new Ferrari 599 GTO, for example, is to date the company's fastest road car, topping out at a speed of almost 210 miles per hour. Chinese automaker Geely -- which this month confirmed its purchase of Volvo -- has also unveiled its Gleagle IG model, which is the latest in its line of sedan vehicles. The Beijing Auto Show holds special significance for the auto industry because it is seen as an entry-point into the world's fastest growing car market. It's reported that in China there are only a few dozen cars to every 1000 people -- compared to 500 cars to every 1000 people in many developed nations -- and it's in filling this gap that the event's participants are keenly interested.
